"Not only was the weather great and the bonefish bite fantastic, but fishing with Paul Shuey was a treat."
Myers could not believe that Shuey is so connected with fishing.
"He lives and breathes fishing," Myers said. "Fishing is not a hobby for Shuey. It's his life and he treats fishing as an art form."
Myers said Shuey has a fishing hole everywhere he goes.
"Fishing for Paul is like therapy," Myers said. "He uses it to clear his mind before big games and to just take his mind off of things. You can see just how in love he is with the sport every time he makes a cast."
Myers also raved about the wonderful accommodations and beautiful surroundings at the Peace and Plenty Bonefish Lodge.
"You want to feel like you're a million miles from anything, this is the place to do it," Myers said.
Winter fishing:
Some very good winter time fishing is continuing in Southern California with yellowtail and white seabass showing in a very early season.
The Mission Belle out of Seaforth Sportfishing in San Diego decided to take a look at the Coronado Islands on Sunday and got quite a surprise. Twenty-four anglers on board were rewarded with 24 yellowtail, but the number of yellowtail was not the entire story.
"The numbers of yellows are not the story," said Mission Belle skipper Ryan Bostian. "It's the size of these fish that makes this bite so special with most of the yellowtail in the 20-pound class and some fish as big as 30 pounds."
Bostian said he saw enough fish to convince him that if the winter weather remains mild, this bite should keep rolling along.
Last Friday, the Dreamer took off for Catalina Island with six anglers in search of white seabass. Skipper Allyn Watson was convinced that he could make a catch of white seabass and he did. In the first big white seabass bite of 2004, the Dreamer had limits of 18- to 40-pound white seabass.
"It looks like an early season," Watson said. "This was as good of a seabass bite as you will see and I was very impressed by the size of these fish. Many times, the early season white seabass will be small, but these were all brutes.
"In fact, there were some fish that we just could not stop," said Watson leading him to believe they were seabass over 40 pounds. "I think we are in for an early season on the big seabass. It's looking really good."
Whale watching:
Whale watching season is at its apex right now, and Southern California whale watching boats are encountering a lot of gray whales.
John Glackin of Redondo Sportfishing had two gray whales off the bow of his boat on Wednesday afternoon and reported very good whale watching all week long.
"The weather has been beautiful, and in most cases we find a whale within (30 minutes) of leaving port," Glackin said.
