Salmon spawn trout

TOKYO -- Most kids bear some family resemblance to their parents. But a group of trout that hatched recently in Japan look nothing like their dads because the dads are all salmon! For the first time, scientists have altered the biology of one species of fish so that it can produce a different species.

U.S. Gov't Grows Giant Mutant Trout
An anonymous reader writes "USDA scientists are genetically engineering trout that have three sets of chromosomes instead of the usual two. Trout with three chromosome grow faster because they are unable to reproduce, and energy from the food they eat is shifted from reproduction to growth. No word on whether said trout produce more fish fingers than their non-Frankenstein brothers."

State to crack down on 'bucket biologists'
HELENA - State officials are beefing up efforts this summer to stop "bucket biologists" - people who illegally dump fish in waters where they don't belong.

Yutaka Takeuchi, a professor of marine science at Tokyo University, conceived the experiment. He first extracted primordial germ cells (PGCs) from the tiny embryos (fertilized eggs) of rainbow trout. PGCs give rise to gonads--sex organs that produce sperm or eggs in mature fish. He then transplanted the PGCs into the embryos of male masu salmon.

When the male salmon embryos developed and reached sexual maturity, their gonads produced both salmon sperm and trout sperm. Takeuchi then took some of the trout sperm and used it to fertilize eggs from female trout. The fertilized eggs grew into young trout that had salmon fathers and trout mothers.

Though masu salmon and rainbow trout are related, they are still separated by eight million years of evolution. The same transplantation technique might be used successfully to rescue threatened or endangered fish, such as the bluefin tuna, from disappearing, says Takeuchi. "If primordial germ cells of bluefin tuna could be transplanted into mackerel, the surrogate mackerel would produce mature eggs and sperm derived from the donor tuna," said Takeuchi. "Therefore, our techniques may help to feed the world's sushi habit."

Not all scientists are impressed by such a solution. John Sumpter, a fish biologist at Brunel University in England, says rescuing fish from extinction should be done by stopping habitat loss and overfishing.

The Japanese researchers believe that their technique might one day be refined to work in other animals and even animals of very different genetic makeups. Might a dog give birth to a cat, a chimp to a gorilla, a mouse to an elephant?
