Kodiak awaits new king salmon fishery in 2005

"We really set this thing up so people can fish from the beach. And we expect there'll be some spin-off for tourism," state biologist Len Schwarz told the Kodiak Daily Mirror.

The Karluk River provided the broodstock. Eggs were incubated and fry reared to smolt size at the Pillar Creek Hatchery, near Kodiak.

In the spring of 2002, state biologists transferred the first smolt from their hatchery feeding pens to Monashka Creek, which flows into Monashka Bay. In May 2003, they released 30,000 more smolt into the creek.

The smolt are held in the creek for several days, until they "imprint." When released, they go to sea, where they remain from one to five years. The first return of kings in the 20-something-pound class will return to Monashka Bay in 2005, when about 500 adults are expected. According to the Statewide Stocking Plan, the objective for the return is 3,000 adult kings.

The new fishery is a joint effort of the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, the Kodiak Regional Aquaculture Association, the Kodiak Sportfishing Association and the Kodiak Association of Charterboat Operators. The president of KACO, Tony Chatto, said sport fishermen supported the program from the start, volunteered their time and paid for hatchery feed.
