Boston Whaler's new "cross-over" 320 Cuddy Cabin Outrage takes their unsinkable 32-foot center console and adds a decent size cuddy cabin forward. Separating the forward cabin from the center console is an L-shaped seating area that makes a great conversation lounge.

The arrangement still leaves access to the bow via some molded steps leading to a low, non-skid-covered cabin top. There are also two utility centers, bait prep station and a bait freezer.

The crew will like the optional weather curtain package that encloses the forward cockpit area--great for overnights--and a refreshment center near the bow steps. There's a stand-up head in the center console and lots of lockable stowage. A unique stern seat design allows seating for three or folds away flush to the transom.

Meanwhile, Everglades, a builder of unsinkable flats and V-hull bay boats, gained accolades at the show by winning a National Marine Manufacturers Association Innovation Award with its new 290 Pilot. While this walk-around does not have a cuddy, it does try to please non-fishermen with a forward area flanked with seating with full, curved backrests and plush bow cushions, a swim platform, and lots of handrails for safety.

The Innovation Award judges liked the Pilot's fold-down transom seat contained in a box that can be lifted to provide access to batteries and other equipment. One judge commented on the unique integrated tracks used for side canvas attachment to the beefy center console with a wrap-around windshield integrated into the hardtop.

The captain's console has a head underneath and features a power-operated (.a. James Bond-like) security "windshield" that hides helm electronics when not in use, and there's also a tackle station with running fresh and salt water.

Both vessels are USCG rated for 14 passengers. But perhaps the best indicator that these boats were made for more than fishing is the number of drink holders--there's an incredible 26 between the two of them.
